| Abstract: |
When people say that Data Governance is both an art and a science, here's what they mean. The answer to the question "What does Data Governance do?" depends on whether your program is going to focus on Data Quality, Compliance, MDM, or many other types of efforts. The answer to the question "How does Data Governance operate?" depends on how it needs to align with existing and planned business, compliance, technology, and data management efforts. "Who should do what?" depends on choices you make as you put Data Governance into the context of your formal or informal Enterprise Architecture program and its Data Strategy.
Gwen Thomas, President and Founder of the Data Governance Institute, explains both the art and science behind fitting Data Governance into your current landscape. She'll set the stage by introducing the (free) DGI Data Governance Framework, steps to take as you're first introducing formal governance, and activities to avoid as you choose between 6 models of Data Stewardship. Then she'll concentrate on choices you'll need to make initially and revisit in years 2, 3, and 4 of a program as you work out how to align Data Governance and Stewardship with Risk & Compliance, Metadata Management, Master Data Management, Data Warehousing, and Data Integration.
