Advanced Data Visualization for Critical Strategic Decisions

Presented by Michael Scofield - Principal from Scofield Data Consulting

Data visualization uses graphic techniques to convert raw data into information which humans can more easily understand.  This process supports two major functions; first is data analysis (or business analysis) to help understanding what is going in the data and the business it describes.  The second function is to communicate to executives and decision-makers what is happening in the business and its environment which they need to know for major strategic decisions and crafting good policy.

We will review the data-to-information life cycle (the basic conversion of raw data to information) and some of the issues of consistency, definition, and normalization.

One challenge in business communication is expressing very large numbers in a way that the human eye-brain can grasp them.  These include large legal judgments, the U.S. federal debt, and very large national economies.  We will examine graphic techniques to place them in broader context and make them easier to understand.

Michael Scofield, M.B.A. is a popular speaker in data management.  He has spent most of his career in systems development, data management, and information quality.  He has lectured to over 410 professional audiences around the U.S., Canada, and in the U.K. and Australia.  He has over 27 published articles in data management, particularly in data quality assessment.  Recently, his more popular topics include understanding sources of organizational complexity, data quality assessment, semantic data integration, and data visualization.  He also lectures widely to general audiences on topics of travel, history, interpreting satellite imagery,  and civics.
