Data Quality Maturity: A Retrospective of Target’s Product Data Journey
Over the past decade, Target’s item data domain has evolved through multiple stages of data quality maturity. This presentation offers a retrospective of that journey, highlighting key wins, lessons learned, and the tools developed along the way. Attendees will gain practical insights into advancing data quality maturity within operational data environments, grounded in real-world experience.
The session emphasizes that effective data quality and governance are fundamentally people-driven—requiring shared ownership, clear accountability, and strong alignment with day-to-day business operations. Looking back, we will also share what we learned and what we would approach differently if starting again today.
Finally, the presentation explores how data governance is enabled through critical artifacts such as data catalogs, documentation, performance metrics, scorecards, dashboards, and business rule engines that support validation, monitoring, and the prevention of poor-quality data.
Takeaways:
- Understanding the 4 critical phases of data quality maturity and the nessesity to revisit phases over time.
